New York workplace accident attorney Edgar Romano of Pasternack Tilker Ziegler Walsh Stanton & Romano L.L.P. expresses concerns about the recent rise in workplace accidents among New York City public workers.

New York, NY (PRWEB) June 15, 2014

Injuries to New York City public employees cost the city $17.4 million in workers' compensation costs and penalties in 2013, an increase of 71 percent since 2005, according to a recent report that came as no surprise to New York City workplace accident lawyer Edgar Romano of Pasternack Tilker Ziegler Walsh Stanton & Romano, L.L.P.

Romano expressed his comments in response to an article published June 9, 2014, in The Chief, New York City's Civil Service Employees' weekly newspaper.

"This report clearly shows that New York City needs to do more to protect its employees from serious on-the-job injuries," Romano said. "Public employees in New York perform some of the most dangerous work in New York. Firefighters and police officers, sanitation workers and construction workers keep our city's streets safe and functioning. And more clearly needs to be done to protect New York City employees from serious injuries. This isn't about money. It's about safety and making sure workers can perform their job without fear of being injured on the job in New York."

The $17.4 million figure represents "just a fraction of the ongoing costs" due to workplace injuries involving New York City public employees, according to The Chief. In 2013, the city spent $252 million on workplace injuries involving New York City employees injured in the past who are still being compensated, The Chief reported.

And even that figure only begins to cover what New York City spends on workplace injuries. According to The Chief, "For every dollar the city spends directly on health care and wages for hurt workers, it's estimated to spend another $3 to $5 on other costs—like training and retraining programs, recruitment and downtime."

But such figures do not tell the real story, as New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health's (NYCOSH) Executive Director Joel Shufro noted in The Chief article. "These costs do not in any way account for the pain and suffering caused by this heavy toll of injury and illness," Mr. Shufro said. "They also gloss over the horror of many of the truly gruesome workplace injuries."

New York workplace accident lawyer Romano said he agreed. "No amount of money can make up for the pain and suffering people experience as a result of a serious or fatal workplace injury," Romano said. "When someone sustains a serious injury on the job, the consequences can last a lifetime and affect entire families for their rest of their lives. That's why we take our work so seriously. Injury victims rely on us to help them get the money they rightfully deserve so their families can continue to live their lives with dignity. We're here to help. We're on your side."
